McDowell Lake First Nation (Oji-Cree: Mishi Sakahikaniing) is a small Oji-Cree First Nation band government located in Northern Ontario, approximately 155 km northeast of Red Lake, Ontario, Canada, on the central western shore of McDowell Lake.
The community was established by trapper Johnny Kenequanash in the 1940s on the shores of Misi-zhaaga'igan, meaning "the grand lake" in Oji-Cree. The community is part of the Keewaytinook Okimakanak Council (Northern Chiefs) and the Nishnawbe Aski Nation.
Our community is home to 52 registered members and is accessible by float and ski-equipped aircraft. While no winter/ice roads connect directly to the community, trails can be accessed via snowmobile or snowshoes from winter roads connecting Red Lake to nearby First Nations.
The community received official Band status in 1985, and in 2015, we celebrated the opening of a 10 kW solar system at our new Band Office - the first source of electricity in our community, marking a significant milestone in our journey toward self-sufficiency.
